I know that lots of boomers may be leery of having their personal health history and prescription drug information available online, but this service might be worth a look. It could even save your life. For example if you are traveling abroad, or even just out of state and fall ill, you could easily provide the hospital doctors and nurses with the health and prescription information they need, assuming you were awake and alert or had a family member by your side who could gain access to your Google Health account.

For some in great health this may not seem like a big deal. But if you take 5, 6, 7 or more prescriptions a day and sometimes you just can’t remember the name of the one that starts with an “A”, you can see where a service such as this might be helpful. The downside is that only a few health care providers (Cleveland Clinic, QuestDiagnostics (lab), Walgreen’s (pharmacy) among a few others) have the ability to send your data to Google Health, but look for the number to quickly expand as the program rolls out. If your health care provider/pharmacy do not currently participate you’ll have to import your data manually (by hand).

Take the Google Health tour to learn about all the features available.

I’ve written about Boomers exploring different ways of going green here before, and no doubt it will be a noteworthy trend in years to come. Developers interested in the boomer market better get their green home plans and designs together!

A recent broad daylight break-in and robbery in my gated Florida community reminds me that everyone needs to be careful and vigilant when it comes to keeping you, your loved ones, and your property safe. As I’ve said before, crime doesn’t discriminate based on location. Just because you live in a gated community doesn’t necessarily mean you’re safe.

I recommend having a security system installed (make sure you are given a yard sign and window stickers which can act as an added deterrent). Most people only set it when they are away from the home or when they go to bed at night, but now we’ll be keeping ours on during the day as well, and you should too.

Security systems are available through companies like Brinks and ADT. Personally I use a system through Alarm.com that uses wireless signals (much like a pager) so that if a phone line is cut, it will still notify the authorities in case of emergency.

This type of wireless security system can also be controlled through the internet, which is great for a second homeowner. Through an online interface you can see system activity, arm and disarm if necessary, and more. Check it out if you’re looking for a great wireless internet security system.

Be safe!
